Asbestos Management Brief: RMI
The PacWastePlus Regional Asbestos Project will support countries in executing solutions, both legislative and policy-driven, to prevent exposure to asbestos fibre, and thereby reduce asbestos-related diseases. This document provides guidance for RMI to progress work on the development and implementation of a National ACM ban with this resource providing background information, identifying policy and legislative options available.

Republic of Marshall Islands Project Profile – Improving Solid Waste Management in Majuro: Diversion of 40% Waste from Landfill
The overflowing Jable–Batkan dumpsite in Majuro is an urgent problem for waste management faced in the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI). This dumpsite has long exceeded its design capacity with waste now pushed up to 17m high against a seawall on the ocean side of the atoll. The priority for RMI is to reduce waste disposal at the dumpsite. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks to focus their PacWastePlus investment to introduce a programme to divert the largest two components of waste - organics (17%) and paper/cardboard (22%) - from disposal and instead be processed to compost at an organics facility. In addition to reducing 40% of waste disposal at the dumpsite, almost doubling its remaining lifespan, this project will provide local organic compost to communities to assist improve with soil quality and crop yield.

PacWastePlus Project Snapshot – Republic of Marshall Islands
The Majuro Atoll Waste Company (MAWC), owned by the national government and the Majuro Atoll Local Government, is responsible for solid waste collection, landfill management, and recycling in Majuro. MAWC provides weekly collection services to around 80% of households in Majuro. The remaining houses are responsible for transporting their wastes to Majuro’s dumpsite. In outer islands, rubbish collection services are poor, ad-hoc, or completely absent. Many houses without collection services have instead created backyard pits. MAWC administers a Container Deposit system, collecting aluminum cans, PET bottles, and glass bottles.

The UoM team reviewed legislation relevant to waste management in 14 Pacific region countries and Timor-Leste. Separate assessments are provided for each of the PacWastePlus participating countries. This report provides a detailed view of the legislative environment governing waste management currently in operation in the Republic of Marshall Islands.
