E-WASTE
The rapidly increasing use of electrical and electronic equipment in the Pacific has resulted in an increase in the volume of E-Waste. Electrical and end of life electronic items contain many recoverable and valuable components such as copper, steel and gold. Most components used in electronic and electrical equipment (including computing equipment) can be reused or recovered and made into new products. Effective management of E-Waste in PICTs is varied and poses economical, logistical and technical challenges due to limited access to disposal points, recycling markets and the high costs in transporting E-Waste out of the region.
Project Description
The purpose of this regional project is to promote understanding of E-Waste, its risks and opportunities; to assist Countries in building capacity to properly manage E-Waste; provide support tools to properly manage and handle E-Waste.
Regional E-Waste training
A regional E-waste training investment will be implemented. This constitutes a two-day course consisting of five training modules followed by hands on E-Waste handling activities:
• Module 1 – Introducing Responsible E-Waste Management
• Module 2 – PPE for Safe E-Waste Management
• Module 3 – Best Practice E-Waste Handling Procedures
• Module 4 – Assessing Management Pathways
• Module 5 – Preparation for Life Cycle Extension
• Module 6 – Hands on E-Waste activities
The training is ‘hands-on’ with how to safely undertake dismantling, what products should be dismantled to increase the value of the commodities, and on how to arrange and manage shipping to market. The entire focus is to ensure countries have capacities built to enable this to be a recurrent activity.
Additional Resources
Several countries have included activities addressing E-Waste management. This regional project was developed to utilise those project outcomes and develop regional resources to enable all countries to benefit from the efforts of these countries.
