News - Jun 4, 2025 Solomon Islands Technical Working Committee work to finalise Product Stewardship Scheme design for the country

The Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology, (MECDEM) with the assistance of Solomon Islands Technical Working Committee, worked with the PacWastePlus team and their consultants to finalise the design of the national Product Stewardship Scheme.

The scheme, once implemented, will establish a structured system for managing end-of-life products, ensuring manufacturers, importers, retailers, and consumers share responsibility for waste management.  This initiative marks a major step toward sustainable waste management and environmental protection in the Solomon Islands.

Solomon Island’s Minister for Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology, Hon. Trevor Maehaga, in welcoming the PacWaste Plus mission to Solomon Islands highlighted that “bottles is an ongoing issue and Solomon Islands, and he is pleased to see that a system will be introduced to assist the ministry in managing this item.”

The Technical Working Committee includes representatives from government agencies, private sector, civil society, and development partners, identified and confirmed a scheme that is suitable to the national economy and will provide equitable access for all communities.

The scheme will include the introduction of regulatory frameworks, enforcement strategies, and stakeholder engagement to ensure a smooth transition and nationwide compliance.

The Solomon Islands government will soon launch public consultations, industry discussions, and pilot programs to finalise implementation guidelines before the official rollout.
