E-waste - Jun 4, 2025 Niue e-waste management

Niue’s Department of Environment (Niue DOE) now has an operating e-waste dismantling process established inside their Resource Recovery Centre.
It comes with mechanical equipment (industrial weigh scales, storage, bulk bags, collection units, pallet jack; hand-tools – screwdriver sets, spanner & socket sets, wire cutters, hex key sets; Power tools – cordless drills; and consumables – shrink-wrap, insulation tape, respiratory mask replacement filters) supplied by PacWastePlus through the country project allocation.
Armed with these new resources, DOE undertook a weeklong legacy e-waste dismantling/processing workshop where they processed their stockpiled e-waste, as they were taught to correctly dismantle the various e-waste elements, and pack them for international shipment.
Training focussed on seven categories of e-waste:
- Category 1 (Temperature exchange equipment).
- Category 2 (Screens, monitors & equipment with screens over 100cm²).
- Category 3 (Lamps and lighting equipment).
- Category 4 (Large equipment).
- Category 5 (Small equipment).
- Category 6 (Telecommunication equipment and small IT equipment).
- Category 7 (Batteries).
TechCollect NZ developed and the training modules to DOE officers and contractors from the private sector that oversee e-waste and white ware stockpile management. Ten participants were trained in the workshop, five from the private sector and five from Niue DoE.
Michael Dudley, Head of Operations for TechCollect NZ said “The programme provides our partners in the Pacific with the practical knowledge needed to manage their e-waste in a safer and more responsible way. The training was tailored to the Niuean context and includes theory-based and physical e-waste management training spanning all aspects of e-waste life cycle management, and ensuring trainees get hands-on and put the practical knowledge they have gained to effective use.
It is great to see Niue DOE equipped with the tools and know-how needed to protect and future proof their pristine environment – TechCollect NZ and our project partners from ANZRP and The Recycling Group Limited are proud to play our part in this collaborative initiative, sharing our combined experience and expertise to lift the regions e-waste management practices and outcomes into the future.”
The training delivered in Niue is now being rolled out across the region.
