News - Jun 4, 2025 Compost Resources for Communities

PacWastePlus has released a new set of “community focused” animations and factsheet resources to help households in the Pacific understand composting and the benefits for their communities.
Organics can comprise up to 65% of the waste in community dumps which, when mixed in a dump with other material like plastics and nappies etc, can cause soil and water pollution, odour, and methane.
By providing communities with an understanding of composting, this “waste” can be converted to a nutrient-rich resource – improving soil quality, increasing crop yield, assisting climate resistance, and saving money by replacing imported fertilizers.
The “community focused” resources are designed to make composting easy to understand – breaking down the process into steps: how to make a compost bin, how to add items (understanding the “carbon / nitrogen ratio”, and ensuring correct balance of air, food and water), and how to use compost as a nutrient-rich boost in gardens and plantations.
There are two factsheets (Household Composting, and Community Composting), and a 4-5 minute animation designed to be shared and shown at community outreach sessions.
The animation has been translated into 10 languages; Chuukese, English, iKiribati, iTaukei, Marshallese, PNG Pidgin, Samoan, Tongan, Tuvaluan and Vanuatu Bislama.
The “community focused” resources are designed for households and communities to make a difference in reducing waste and improving their local environment. By making composting fun, accessible, and easy to understand, we hope to assist individuals and families to take small actions that add up to big changes.
The factsheets and the 10 animations can be found on the SPREP website and YouTube channel:
