News - Jun 4, 2025 Communities in Niutao, Nanumea, and Nukulaelae receive Recycling Infrastructure

New recycling depots have arrived on the Tuvaluan outer islands of Niutao, Nanumea, and Nukulaelae, enabling these communities to take a step closer to participating in the Tuvalu Waste Levy.
The depots will be operated by the Island Waste Officers, providing ongoing recyclable collection from all islands in Tuvalu and ensuring outer islands residents can claim their refunds when they drop off their recyclable items.
Each island is undergoing the installation of footings before the depots are officially opened.
The depots provide the first coordinated recycling infrastructure to Tuvalu’s outer islands, allowing all communities to benefit from a cleaner environment.
Director of Waste Management, Mr Epu Falega, says: “We’re thrilled with the progress and look forward to continuing this important work on the outer islands, helping to create cleaner, greener communities.”
