News - Jun 4, 2025 Schools Curriculum Toolkit Capacity Building Sessions implemented throughout the Region

The PacWastePlus Programme is rolling out capacity building training throughout the region on the use of the schools curriculum resource kit.

The Curriculum Toolkit is designed specifically for use in Primary and Secondary Schools. The Toolkit assists teachers to emphasise the crucial role of schools as educational agents in sensitising future generations to waste management.

The curriculum toolkit is a resource which empowers teachers by providing knowledge on waste management and supporting the inclusion of toolkit exercises into their class work. The toolkit is not designed to replace current curriculum, but instead offers a series of class exercises, tailored to different ages and skill sets, enabling waste messages to be incorporated into all STEM classes.

Teachers and Ministries can easily incorporate the curriculum into standard school subjects based on their ability and intention to do so.

Training has been delivered in the Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Republic of Marshall Islands, Palau, and Vanuatu.  All countries were provided an opportunity to participate in self-paced online learning with access to the training team to guide learning and answer questions.

Claytoncy Taurarii of the Cook Islands said: “Thank you so much Sumaiya for an amazing session yesterday on the toolkit as well as for the resources- I currently have this on a Flash Drive which I will be distributing these to the Teachers and the Waste Educators. The session was very engaging and the teachers enjoyed the session, which now I have become busy to help teachers out with the resources.

“I would also like to acknowledge Virginia and her team at MRA Consulting for taking up the contract to deliver this training in the Cook Islands, your behind the scenes in ensuring we are prepared for this training did make things easy for us on this side.

“To PWP team -Bradley many thanks for thinking of the Cook Islands to part-take in this training and for allocating budget as well, one thing for sure that was raised is when is the next one- seeing that this a vital tool for our children and the community.”

The self-paced training is currently underway at present, with support ending in April 2025.
